THE OUGHTRED IM2015 MEETING
From Logarithms to Algorithms:
Bridging 400 Years of Scientific and Computing Evolution
September 25, 26 and 27, 2015 located in Burlingame, California.

The Oughtred Society is pleased to be co-hosting the International Meeting of Slide Rule Collectors - IM 2015, in conjunction with special events and displays at the Computer History Museum, a tour of the impressive display of Bob Otnes' slide rule and calculator collection, and a sale of important items from the Tom Wyman and David Gamble Collections.

The theme for this meeting will be From Logarithms to Algorithms: Bridging 400 Years of Scientific and Computing Evolution to reflect both the recent celebration of the Quadricentenary of Napier's work on logarithms as well as to highlight the importance of Silicon Valley to computing the rapid advances in technology during our lifetimes.

The meeting will be held from Thursday September 24 through Sunday September 27 at the Hyatt Regency SFO, 1333 Bayshore Highway, in Burlingame, CA. A block of rooms has been set aside for Oughtred Society Members at a discount rate of $199/night plus applicable taxes¹ and fees² amounting to $48.88/night. Please note that the number of rooms available at this guaranteed rate is limited and we strongly urge attendees to book their rooms as early as possible to guarantee this excellent negotiated rate³. Bay Area hotel prices can quite high; for example, after the special OS room availability expires, normal room rates at Hyatt generally run at $329 and higher. Hotel space in the Bay Area is limited and the area is routinely overbooked; therefore early action on reserving a room is very highly recommended.

Note¹: Taxes: 12.00% Hotel Room Tax Per Night+ $1.00 Tourism Fee Per Night, or $24.88/night at the booked room rate.
Note²: Parking: For those of us driving to and staying at the hotel, please be aware that you have to PAY for parking at $24/night. If you are just driving to the meetings, or meals, self-parking is $6 up to 1 hour, $12 up to 6 hours, and $24 for 6+ hours. Valet parking is $10 up to 1 hour, $18 up to 6 hours, and $28 for 6+ hours. For oversized vehicles, the rate will be $40, with $20 per additional axle.
Note³: Cancellations: Cancel by 3pm hotel time 1 day (24 hours) prior to arrival to avoid cancellation fee.

Evening - Tour of Bob Otnes Slide Rule and Calculator Collection at the Home of Bob Otnes, Palo Alto, CA. Bob's collection is one of the best private collections of rare and unusual slide rules and mechanical calculating devices in the world and he has generously invited the IM2015 participants to share in his finds and stories behind the pieces.

Afternoon - Additional Activities To Be Arranged

The story behind the Babbage Engine currently on display at Computer History Museum is a very interesting one. The first complete Babbage Engine was completed at the Science Museum in London in 2002, over 150 years after it was initially designed by Charles Babbage. The Difference Engine No. 2, built directly from the original drawings, is comprised of over 8000 parts and measures 11 feet in length, but did not include the section for generating printing plates for printing the tables. Nathan Myhrvold, then a Vice-President at Microsoft, negotiated to have a complete second copy of the Babbage engine made, in exchange for funding the printing section for the London engine. This second engine, completed in March 2008, has been on display at the Computer History Museum and is regularly demonstrated to the public.

Conference registration costs include attendance to all activities at Hyatt SFO, all OS-sponsored events, Breakfast and Lunch on Friday, Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner on Saturday, refreshments breaks during the conference, and a digital copy on disk of the proceedings. Hard copies of the proceedings will also be available for purchase at the meeting.
